A full size bus carrying over 20 passengers lost control on a down hill road causing a chain of damage to nine vehicles at 8:50 am on Tuesday. While no one was seriously injured three people required treatment and the driver of the bus was detained by police for exceeding the speed limit. The conditions have also been blamed for the incident. The tunnel road located in the Bayanzurkh district, was deemed as dangerously slippery, and has raised concern about the state of the city’s roads. According to G.Batbayar from the Public Relations Department at the Bayanzurkh District Police Station, “The accident happened because he exceeded the speed limit, but the road in this area is so slippery,” he said. “The bus driver said he did break, but the bus didn’t stop. Since our final report hasn’t been released, we can’t provide conclusive information on whose fault it was, or who should take full responsibility.”
He also added that, “depending on how huge the damage is, we will decided whether it is a criminal case or not.” The bus driver D.Belegdemberel is over 50 years old and has been driving buses for over a decade. He said, “I have been driving through this tunnel for a year. The tunnel road can be so slippery. I was only driving at a speed of about 20-30km.” The owner of one of the cars involved said, “the bus was well over the speed limit, I think. I still can’t believe that me and my dad survived.” Authorities of the bus company Tenuun-Ogoo, said, “All bus drivers who work at our company have insurance. However, they can only get up to 10 million MNT a year.” “I don’t know if it will be enough to cover the damage costs. In the morning, all the buses go through technical inspections and this morning was no different. It is possible he exceeded speed limit.”
